Microsoft, the American tech giant, has announced a significant investment of £2.5 billion for the roll-out of next-generation AI data centres in the UK, with South Wales being identified as a key location. The proposed site is the former Quinn Radiators building at Imperial Park. The existing 760,000 sq ft empty building will be demolished to pave the way for two hyperscale data centres, along with supporting buildings, extending to 370,000 sq ft. The project, once fully operational, is expected to create 120 jobs.

Although Microsoft hasn't confirmed whether the Newport project forms part of its latest investment announcement, its draft planning application states: "Microsoft has the ambition to establish an 'availability zone with several data centres in South Wales; the proposed development on the Quinn site is part of realising this ambition."

Jane Mudd, Leader of Newport City Council and Cardiff Capital Region’s portfolio lead on data-driven economy and skills, welcomed the investment. She said, "This is a welcome and vital boost to the UK economy and will continue to build on AI capability within the Cardiff Capital Region. The region's focus on industrial clusters - including fintech, cyber security, and compound semiconductors - means we are increasingly gaining a reputation in the UK and beyond for technology-enabled innovation.
